Hall Of Heroes:
By Vince Zannelli

In 2008, Hasbro Toy Group conducted a poll among G.I. Joe: ARAH 3 ¾” enthusiasts via their website, and asked collectors which 10 G.I. Joe characters throughout the line’s rich history they would like to see commemorated in a special fan-selected “Hall of Heroes” figure assortment. The poll produced some predictable results, but also had a few surprises in store as the final list of figures included the following: Zartan, B.A.T., Flint, Crimson Guard Trooper w/ removable helmet, Beach Head, Firefly, Snake Eyes v.1, Snake Eyes v.2 with Timber, Viper, and Storm Shadow.

The figures themselves were essentially the same as previous releases, but several had slight modifications to either the figure or the accessories; of note is Zartan’s new card art, Firefly’s accessories (previously found only in a comic book two-pack), and the Crimson Guard Trooper with removable helmet, who had not been released single carded before this assortment. The figure stands were repainted metallic gold, and each card back was lined in gold foil around the perimeter and across the title. Perhaps the most notable caveat regarding packaging is the inclusion of an outer box, which serves to protect and accentuate the carded figure within.

The first wave of Hall Of Heroes provided for an attractive twist on a classic toy line that deserves the utmost in detail and quality for display and long-term preservation. The success of this line will more than likely serve as a litmus test for Hasbro as they consider additional high-end, specialty store-only releases for their other popular 1980s toy properties.
