Mego: Star Trek The Motion Picture
To Boldly Go…
KLINGON

Comments: In 1979, Mego offered a range of toys based on the Paramount Pictures feature film Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The collection included two waves of 3 3/4" action figures, one 3 3/4" scaled playset, and a series of six 1/6 scale action figures.

The first wave of 3 3/4 figures featured six of the Enterprise's crew, including Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, along with new comers Ilia and Decker. This assortment was easy to come across then and now. The second wave which featured six alien action figures including the Arcturian, the Betelgeusian, the Klingon, the Megarite, the Rigellian, and the Zaranite, on the other hand, was pretty tough to find in 1979 and near impossible to locate now. with sales of the first wave not being very strong in the U.S. the second wave was sold primarily in Canada (Grand Toys) and Italy (Ceppi Ratti), but three were made available through 1979 JC Penney catalogue. And that is a common story for toys that are now very expensive and hard to obtain.

The JC Penney set was listed as featuring the Arcturian, the Klingon, and the Rigellian (as pictured on the Photo Archive pages for these three figures), there are known examples that have the Megarite in place of the Rigellian. While all six figures from series two are considered extremely rare, the Betegeusian and the Megarite are especially difficult to find in any condition.
