Flashback Friday Follow-Up: Toy Biz's X-FORCE Wave 5
Posted by Curto on February 8, 2009 at 12:00 PM CST:

As a special follow-up to this week's Flashback Friday update, the CTR spotlight remains on Toy Biz's X-Force line all weekend long! Get all the info on 1994's action figures from wave 5 after the jump!

Action Figures - Wave 5

At this point, there was a big change to the X-Force line: the cardbacks became generic. As we've already seen, the earlier waves all featured unique illustrations of the specific characters, capturing the figurs in dynamic action poses. But now, they all featured a generic illustration of Cable, who was of course the most popular member of the team. At this point, I don't think he was their leader anymore, since he spun off into his own adventures, but the two books would frequently cross over.

NOTE: Both Black Tom and Mojo were re-released in this wave on the new cardbacks, but since they were both spotlighted earlier, they are not included in this report (other than this sentence.)

Avalanche
A long-time member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (and for a time, Freedom Force), Avalanche was a unique figure for this line in that he had hinged hips, allowing him to get some really cool stances. His mutant powers allowed him to move the ground, which was represented by a rolling hunk of rock that could launch another hunk of rock at his opponents. A very cool feature that could be used to knock down your figures!

Cable (Urban Assault)
By this time, Cable's origin was revealed...and he was the grown-up version of the son of Cyclops! It's a story that's WAY too complicated to get into here (You gotta love time travel!), but now Cable is wearing an outfit that honors his father. So, now that he's wearing a more traditional X-Men uniform, he needs to have a special action feature, right? This time around, he's got a big honkin' rifle that fires off huge missiles...and as a further insult, he's got a huge shoulder pad that acts as a rotating base to attach the rifle to. Ah well, at least there will be another Cable figure in the next wave.

Commando
Here's another member of the Freedom Force team, who was an older opponent of the X-Men named Crimson Commando. he was nearly killed during a mission, and was reborn as a cyborg. An interesting design that worked nicely as an action figure, complete with a launching cannon instead of a right arm. How does he tie his shoes? Oh wait, he doesn't even have feet!

Exodus
Another relative newcomer to the X-Universe, Exodus was the right-hand man to Magneto, back when Magneto had created Asteroid M and created an army of acolytes. Exodus has appeared several times over the years since then, and although this action figure include metal wings that flap, I don't recall that he need them in order to fly. So, this figure may not be 100% accurate as far as representing his powers. He's still got a pretty cool design, though...

I'm in New York reporting from the New York Comic Con all weekend long, so be sure to stay tuned to this site for all the news coming out of the show, including a sneak peek at the future of the Marvel Universe line!

As a special bonus, be sure to stay tuned throughout the weekend for more figures from the X-Force lineup! Because I can't work all the time, and I know you'll want something to read while I'm offline, the rest of the action figures in the toy line will be spotlighted in a series of special follow-up reports. Enjoy!
