eBay Today: The Quest for the Holy Grail

In 1999, a Japanese company who?s better known for its motor-bike helmets then toys released what many consider to be the definitive Indiana Jones figure--the Holy Grail, if you will. Almost a decade since its release, Toys McCoy?s 1/6 scale Indy (12 inches for the scale impaired) has one of the best resemblances of Harrison Ford?as Indiana Jones?in plastic to date. Toys McCoy sacrificed no details, dressing their Indy in film-accurate threads and packing him with a myriad of extras. Besides his trusty fedora and leather braided whip, Indy includes a sand bag, the Golden Idol of Fertility with a satchel to store it in, a revolver with rotating bullet chamber and a leather jacket, among other items. A pair of socks was even included!
Packaged in a box decorated with artwork that stirs memories of Kenner?s Raiders line, Toys McCoy?s Indiana Jones was limited to 3,000 individually numbered pieces. The ?36,000 (approximately $300) price tag, steep for even today?s standards, was unfathomable to many collectors during a time when toys were just gaining a legitimacy as high-end collectibles. Despite this, Indy sold out almost immediately and the secondary market aka eBay was your only hope of scoring one?with some auctions reaching as high as $500. Even more scarce was the companion Arabian Horse. Like Indy it was limited in number, but this time to only 1,000 pieces. Though its m.s.r.p. only rang in at ?12,000 the limited quantities put a premium on the after market value.
As you can imagine finding either Indy, the Arabian Horse or both can be very expensive and difficult. The serach has become a quest in itself for many collectors looking for the Holy Grail of Indiana Jones toys.
