Story Summary: By Heather Buckley
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Director: Marcus Nispel
Writer: Scott Kosar
“The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths…” Hey wait that is from the original better film. But for those who need to own Leatherface in all his versions, and maybe I don’t blame you he is one hot number; 2003’s take involves a group of teens driving back from Mexico through Dallas.
They pick up a female hitchhiker who blows a hole through the back of her head. Trying to make sense among the gore, a crazed Sheriff (R. Lee Ermey) gets summoned to the crime scene. Here the teens get abused and tortured only to wind up at Thomas Hewitt a.k.a Leatherface’s (Andrew Bryniarski) household where the killing truly begins. Some fun hick faces, great sets, and exquisitely shot thanks to Daniel Pearl’s handy work makes this film almost watchable.
Leatherface is handled more like Jason Voorhees in this version, much larger, violent, and almost unstoppable. I can’t say it’s a good change; but the kids do demand bigger, stronger, faster nowadays (the same demands they put on their zombies). Turns out, with his mask he has no nose and suffers from a skin condition. Retin A anyone?
