MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE CLASSICS

In case you didn’t know, Masters of the Universe Classics is hot! The fan support at the Mattypalooza panel was strong and positively rowdy, and the MOTUC display case was heavily trafficked. Mattel revealed the winner of its 30th anniversary create-a-figure contest and the winner, dubbed Castle Grayskullman, was well received by fans. The 2012 lineup is closing on an incredible note with fan favorites Mekaneck and the unexpected Filmation-style King Randor finishing off the year. What’s more, 2013 looks just as promising with Ram-Man, Fang Man, Jitsu and others seeded into the first quarter, as well as a King He-Man being offered as the sub’s exclusive figure. To sweeten the pot, Matty left a hint of another figure in 2013 in the form of a green shield that looks a lot like something you’d expect to see with Snake Face. Hint taken Mattel, hint taken.

The Master’s line continues to reward long-time collectors with the Great Unrest Weapons Pak to compliment previously released figures. The accessory pack really “packs” in a ton of cool gear that compliment figures like Man-At-Arms, Keldor, the upcoming Temple of Darkness Sorceress exclusive and others. If you own the incredible Draego-Man figure, you’re going to want this accessory set for the flaming whip and shield alone.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Back to the Future fans, the Hover Board is almost here! Complete with a ‘50s retro style box and a miniature version of the board for those who pre-ordered, the futuristic floating foot-powered transport was in full working order at Mattel’s booth complete with sounds. Is Marty’s Hover Board too girly for you? There was buzz around the Matty booth?other than the one emitting from the Hover Board--that a Pit Bull board might be in the works if the Marty prop replica sells well.

GHOSTBUSTERS

While Ghostbusters won’t have a subscription in 2013, the 6-inch figure line continues with a complimentary Slimer figure for those who subscribed to the ill-fated 2012 Club Ecto-1. Best of all, you’ll receive a free Slimer for each subscription you committed to! While Club Ecto-1 may be dead, the Ghostbusters line is well? undead... with Tony Ghost and Courtroom Ray available in November for $22. If you’re a fan of Mattel’s Ghostbuster prop replicas, you’ll be glad to know another prop replica is in the works for 2013. This time it’s the Ecto Goggles, which have lights and an animation of Slimer on the inside. The electronics sync up with Matty’s PKE Meter prop, which will go haywire the faster the Slimer animation on the goggles moves!

VOLTRON

It’s almost time to form Voltron! In August, the Blue Lion with Princess Allura will ship and subscribers to Club Lion force will receive a vintage-style carded Sven figure?the original Blue Lion pilot. In October you’ll be able to form the head when the Black Lion with Lance ships. A quick note on the Black Lion, the sword and shield are hidden in the back of the packaging, so don’t throw that box away without ripping it apart or you’ll be sorry!

DC UNIVERSE

Being the summer of Batman, Mattel?s The Dark Knight Rises and Batman properties were jammed with figures, accessories and vehicles from a number of the Caped Crusader?s story arcs including the collector friendly Movie Masters line which features build-a-Bat Signal pack-ins. The DC Universe Club Infinite Earths lives on with a second year of much needed collector support. The 2013 line will only be secure if a minimum number of subscriptions are sold and Monsieur Mallah and Brain are slated to be the exclusive for subscribers. 2014 is predicated on the number of 2013 subscriptions that sell and like last year, a thermometer on the subscription?s information page on Matty?s site indicates where things stand. If you want to see Club Infinite Earths continue, you?ve gotta ante up.

Mattel?s newest subscription line for 2013 is the Watchman Club Black Freighter sub. The line is comprised of 6 core member figures including The Comedian, Doctor Manhattan, Ozymandias, Nite Owl, Rorschach, and Silk Spectre each with their appropriate accessories and a Watchman logo figure stand. A new figure will ship every other month and run you $25 each for a total commitment of $150.

MONSTER HIGH

Finally, did we mention the “girls” line that’s all the rage? Fess up guys, we saw you hanging around the Monster High display cases pretending not to check out the dolls *ahem* figures. Monster High creator and design manager Garret Sander was on hand to greet fans and showcase the newest ghouls in school, which include new sub-lines that will see the freaky fabulous crew sporting roller derby gear,? donning superhero attire and living scarily ever after as your favorite fairytale characters.
