There are five kinds of immortal: heavenly, earthly, divine, human and demonic. There are five kinds of beast: snail, scaly, furry, feathered and insect. This wretch is not heavenly, earthly, divine, human or demonic. He is not a snail, or scaly, or furry, or feathered or an insect. Now there are also four kinds of ape that cause confusion and don't come under any of the ten categories. The first kind is the intelligent stone monkey, He can do all kinds of transformation, knows all about the seasons of Heaven and earthly advantages, and can move the stars and their constellations about. The second kind is the red-rumped mandril that knows all about the Yin and the Yang and human affairs, can go into or out of anywhere, and knows how to prolong its life and avoid death. The third kind is the magic-armed gibbon that can catch the sun or moon, shrink mountains, see what is auspicious and what is not, and fool around with heaven and earth. The fourth kind is the six-eared macaque which has wonderful hearing and perception. It knows about the past and the future and understands all creatures. These four kinds of ape do not come within any of the ten categories and are not listed among the creatures that live between heaven and earth.

The stone-born monkey, also known as Sun Wukong, was born from a mythical stone formed from the primal forces of chaos, located in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. He earned their respect by discovering the Water Curtain Cave behind an enormous waterfall. The other monkeys honored him as their king, and he called himself The Handsome Monkey King and "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven". He traveled on a raft where he became a disciple of The Master of the Taoist Immortal----Subhuti. Subhuti's guidance and training taught the monkey a number of magic arts. He acquired the powers of shape-shifting also known as the "72 transformations". He also learned about cloud-traveling, including a technique called the cloud-somersault. In addition he also acquired the Golden-banded staff. After he stole the "Peaches of Immortality" he escaped back to his kingdom in preparation for his rebellion. He single-handedly defeated the Army of Heaven's 100,000 celestial warriors. However, afterwards he lost a bet that he made with Buddha, wherein Sun Wukong remained imprisoned for five centuries.

Five centuries later, the Bodhisattva Guanyin went out in search for disciples that could protect Xuanzang on his journey from the East to India, in order to retrieve the Buddhist sutras. The Monkey King was one of these Three Disciples. The journey to the west was extremely dangerous and thus The Monkey King acted as his bodyguard and was given free access to the powers of God to combat these threats. The group encountered a series of 81 tribulations before accomplishing their mission and returning safely to China. There, Sun Wukong was granted Buddha-hood for his service and strength.
