TF2008 PR: Hasbro G.I. Joe
Posted by Curto on February 28, 2008 at 06:00 PM CST:
It was only supposed to be a pair of 5-packs.

That's all that was planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of G.I.Joe...a boxed set of G.I.Joe figure and a boxed set of Cobra figures. But the fan response from the online debut of the figures was so overwhelmingly positive that a wave of carded figures was quickly created, soon followed by a second, then a third, and you can see where it went in 2007 in our Photo Archive.

The excitement continues in 2008 with a continuing series of carded action figures and Comic Packs, plus new additions of vehicles and entertainment battle packs that bring together all aspects of G.I. Joe from the toy line, comic books, and cartoon series.

Basic Figures
Look for 7 waves of single carded action figures in 2008 (most of waves 2-4 are shown above) for a total of 40 figures! Plus, there will be 15 different Comic Packs for the year (not shown) that will include special comics that are written by comic legend Larry Hama.

12" Figures
G.I. Joe started out as a 12" figure way back in 1964, and this year marks the return to that scale. Featuring a more realistic style than the action figures, this new line will include multiple accessories, cloth outfits, and super-posable bodies.

Entertainment Packs
The big announcement for G.I. Joe was the debut of the Entertainment battle packs. These sets of 3-4 figures will also include a DVD containing classic episodes from the cartoon series, along with a large accessory. Shown were the Weather Dominator and the MASS Device. These sets are designed to work together and will bring to life the action from the classic animated series.

Vehicles
More exciting news from Toy Fair concerns the return of vehicles to the line. While there are a trio of exclusive sets coming to Target stores, these new sets are intended for wide release. The assortments will include 2 smaller vehicles and their pilots, or a medium-sized vehicle with driver.

What's Next?
While the 25th Anniversary celebration has been extended to run throughout 2008, there is something else on the horizon that will set the stage for G.I. Joe for years to come. The live-action feature film is heading to screens in 2009, and filming began on February 11 with an impressive cast that our regular readers should be familiar with already. Naturally, there are no official announcements of any toys based on the movie yet, but of course there will be some major announcements to come, most likely during the summer months.

And fans everywhere will be eagerly waiting each and every report!
