The Cool Toy Review Reader Review of Sideshow Collectibles' 1/6 Scale Shaun Of The Dead Shaun and Ed figures.
by Josh Long

INTRODUCTION

As many of you know Sideshow Collectibles has their own Zombie line call The Dead. Well, what’s a Zombie line without someone to go hunting these Zombies? Now with figures from the extremely funny movie Shaun Of The Dead you can.

Neither Shaun nor Ed is the most driven character in the whole world. Shaun lives a pretty basic life with great aspirations but his drive to reach those goals not being as high. Ed just wants to play video games, eat ice cream, and live off Shaun. He is however a very loyal friend and the kind of friend Shaun will need by his side. Neither of these two thought the day could get any worse but it’s about to in the worst way possible. They now have hoards of zombies coming at them and they must save all they care about by defeating them.

PACKAGING – Shaun & Ed - 6

The box design on Shaun and Ed is very nice. The art, pictures, and story for each character came out nicely. Everything fits into one area unlike the Star Wars line but still looks good overall. Like the dead line though we get stuck with twist ties and those just have to go. Other lines have quit using them so why do these two and The Dead continue to suffer.

SCULPTING – Shaun 10 & Ed 10

The job done on sculpting these two characters is really quite well done. The completely look like the actors who played these two characters. There is a screen cap of the exact scene and the look on Shaun’s face is dead on as is the almost brainless look Ed has going on.

The hair on these two is also sculpted very well this also includes the facial hair on Shaun. The job on the shoes and goodies with these two are also sculpted fantastically.

PAINT – Shaun - 9 & Ed - 8

The paint job on these two while overall came out alright. The skin tone on both figures is quite realistic as to what you would see on a normal person. The eyebrows are also done quite well which compared to the recent Han Solo shows where things need to be with the SW line. Now the issue with the paint on Shaun and Ed lie with how shiny the hair is. It appears like they just stepped out of the shower and their hair is all wet but the skin tone isn’t painted that way except Ed whose stubble makes the skin tone there look wet.

ARTICULATION – Shaun 9 & Ed – 3

We all know the issues with the buck and what it might limit some people to. Shaun has given me no problems with posing him despite the buck which I really have little problem with. The only reason he doesn’t get is because you have to watch posing him or his fly comes open. Ed however was a real pain in the butt to pose. Not because of the buck but because of that silly fat suit he’s wearing and his awful shorts. These two things just kill the posing on him and makes his outfit horrible but more on that later.

ACCESSORIES – Shaun – 6 Ed – 6

These two figures come with a nice set of goodies. Shaun you get the Cricket Bat and Ed you get a shovel. These two are quite nice and make up the bulk of the grade. Shaun the rest of the items are just kind of ok but nothing super special really. He comes with two records, a pool cue, and if you ordered the exclusive the flowers he was supposed to give his Mom. The rest of the items Ed comes with are a cell phone, pool cue, pack of cigarettes, and the exclusive ice cream cone. Needless to say these two kind of lack on the goodies that are all that exciting.

OUTFIT – Shaun - 4 & Ed - 2

OUCH is the word that comes to mind with these two figures as far as outfits go. Neither of these have outfits to the standards I/we expect from Sideshow. The pockets on Shaun’s shirt are way too large they take up almost the entire front of the shirt and the collar is also fairly large. The shirt itself sits just fine on the body though. His pants are also an issue not so much for how they hang but the annoying part is the fact it has no way to close the zipper area. I don’t expect a zipper but I did expect some Velcro or something to keep it closed.

Now, we get to Ed. It pains me to even write about it really. The material his shirt was made out of is wrong and gives the wrong style to the shirt. Watching the movie it’s supposed to be a T-Shirt but as I said it doesn’t look that way. It also isn’t helped by that horrible fat suit thing underneath the figure. It really makes it border on awful and hurts the figure in every way. Then you toss in his shorts which almost can’t stay up on their own. I really assumed they’d be sewn to something or again be Velcroed to something. You cannot pose him without the shorts falling down.

VALUE – Shaun - 5 & Ed – 3.5

These two guys come in at $60 which for the issues they have with the outfits just makes it too much. The extra goodies are ok enough to justify the price, as is the sculpt and paint even, but these outfits are just borderline at best.

OVERALL- Shaun – 5 & Ed – 3.5

Shaun is the best figure of the two by quite a bit. On display with the Dead figures Shaun looks good and makes a nice addition. Ed if you can find a way to redress him might be a pretty good figure but that outfit is just awful. Having said all this with the issues these two have and the price I say get them but do your shopping.
