Reader's Review: LEGO Indiana Jones Motorcycle Chase

Posted by: D. Martin on January 31, 2008 at 01:03 PM CST

LEGO’s Indiana Jones Motorcycle Chase is the only set representing the third film, and it is the smallest of the line. It was also the first set to make it to collectors, with a few hitting eBay before the projected shelf date.

The packaging of this set doesn't have the nice gloss/matte combo that I like so much with the other three, and it is printed on thinner paperboard. Also, this is the only non-collector friendly box. The side flaps are glued shut.

My usual habit is to dump all the pieces in a big pile before building, but there aren't all that many here. I always build the minifigs first. They like to watch as I finish the construction. The Indy figure is the same for all four sets, and the more I see him, the more I like. Though in this particular scene from the movie, he was wearing a tie, I don't mind them overlooking that. Henry Sr. is a great figure as well. The facial deco is spot on! The pith helmet stands in fairly well for his floppy hat. The curious point here is that he has the Grail map. Marcus was in possession of this item at the time. But as the Grail diary is painted in Henry's pocket, the soldier needs to chase him for a reason. Guess the map works well for that. The soldier has the same deco as all the others throughout the line. The difference here is his helmet, rather than the standard soldier kepi.

The motorcycles look very accurate to the period. The Jones' sidecar is nicely designed, using standard bricks (I'm not a fan of too many specialty bricks. Makes building other models limiting.) There is a clip between the bike and sidecar that can hold the whip. Nice touch.

The guard post is a bit thin on pieces, but all you really need is a window and a working gate arm. The rest is imagination. There are two crates included that may be crashed through, 'cuz it's fun! …And lastly: a flagpole. Use this to flip the soldier's bike over! Lots of play value here.

This set has the least amount of design flaws to me. It's the best way to get an Indy figure for relatively cheap, plus you get Henry Sr. I give this set 4 1/2 hats, out of 5. I'm taking a half hat off due to the packaging. Other than that, I am very pleased with this set. Well done, LEGO!!
