Super Impulse: Micro Arcade Oregon Trail Review

We were certainly excited to get our hands on this game and justifiably so. While the game is not a direct emulation of the original, and understandable since there is no keyboard, it still captures what made the original so memorable. All the game elements are there including the original locations, the shops and trading dynamic, the bad grammar, and of course the ever popular hunting mini game.

We did manage to find a bug or two that may or may not be limited to our review sample. In the menus when checking on the info for the pace (option 4) the screen trapped us there after selecting the option. So don't do that, you don't really need it anyway. Also the rest option did not seem to improve our health. Unclear if we did not use it properly or if it is a glitch in the emulation. Also of note, we could not make the hunter move around during the mini game, just shoot from his position. Not sure if this is a glitch, the way the game is set up, or us just not understanding the controls.

Outside of those nits, the game played exactly as we remember. You can find wild berries, lose your party to dysentery, get robbed, and encounter many of the other pitfalls along the way. The map is even there to help keep track of your journey, though the small screen makes it a little difficult to read. The design of this is meant for traveling as it is rechargeable. Also there is an option to cut the sound for when you need to be more discreet.

This is the perfect thing to take on your next road trip, or just keep in your pocket for when you need to kill some time. It's also a great way to introduce a whole new generation to a timeless classic, or help you relive those elementary school glory days.

Thank you to Super Impulse for providing us with a review sample.
